Photography Studio 1 introduces photography as an art form for those like me with little or no experience with this type of medium. Within this course, we are taught the understanding of photography as a creative tool and as a discursive practice.
Topics include camera obscura and pinhole photography, 35mm film camera operation, working with analog materials and processes, light, film exposure and development, black and white printmaking, print finishing, an introduction to digital capture and image processing, display technique, and presentation design. Key issues related to the history and practice of photography from its inception to the present day, are presented throughout the semester to help students appreciate photographs in context, and especially to discover our own motivations to create photographic images.
Broadly, we consider the terms appearance, depiction, description, duration, and representation by examining the relationships that photographs have with the arts and visual culture.
